..and yet the impression widely persists (probably from TV) that if you get shot by a big handgun, you'd go flying backwards across the room or with the actors' "over-acting" be knocked down really well with a big dramatic flail & twist.

Liberals are constantly telling us about the poor and oppressed in this country. With that in mind, why do they feel the need to keep importing poor people from other countries?

Check out the video. You have to go up to a huge caliber rifle (elephant gun) before you get some good "knockdown power".

There is not much of anything on this thread that I agree with. But I will share one small insight. If you really think that you can measure power by recoil, you are greatly mistaken. You can shoot a solid steel 1911 and a lightweight polymer gun. Even though they shoot the same round out of the same length barrel, they will feel very different to the shooter.

And the analogy of the fastball still works. Would it feel different if you caught a fast ball with your bare hands compared to catching it with a catchers mitt?
The recoil is the same, the only thing that changed was the object between your hand and the force.

Using a heavier gun is like having a bigger glove on when you catch.

Yes. If point blank, you would feel the same, but the farther away the target, you actually felt more knockdown power than the target will feel.
