Internal locks on S&W revolvers.
I've decided to have the internal lock removed from my S&W 642 J frame. It's a great little gun and easy to carry as a back-up at work in a pocket holster. It is a delight to shoot and with the proper ammo, I don't feel under-gunned at all.
This issue is being beat to death on the S&W forum, but it seems that the internal locks on some S&W revolvers have a tendency to malfunction and lock up your gun while shooting, making it a small, light weight club. My concern was that it could be one of those Internet myth kind of things, but I got some pretty solid feedback from a trusted shooting professional. I was hesitant to do it until S&W's customer service said "it's not a problem" and that I "should be okay." Sorry Smith, but "should be okay" is somewhat less than 100% in my estimation. When I told them that, they quit talking with me. I know it will void the gun's warranty, but I don't want to take the chance of some bad guy canceling my warranty.
My question is two-fold. Has anyone else here had this sort of problem, and does anyone know if any other manufacturere's guns are having similar difficulty?
