Personal experience:
Black bears like peanut butter, a lot. At least the ones in the Adirondack Park that hang out at the Marcy Dam ‘picnic area’ do. An open jar with peanut butter spread around the outside and tossed to their side, is good for distracting a bear from advancing toward your infant son, who’s in a car seat carrier on a nearby picnic table, allowing you to retrieve him.
