Information for competition shooting

I have never participated in any competition shooting events and would like to start training for one. I own a ruger SR9 for home defense but planned on getting a new 9mm, I'd like some information on choosing a hand gun that is legal in as many competitions as possible... I had planned on getting a glock 34 but recently saw that its banned from ipsc... So my question, I would like pistol recommendations that would be legal to compete in idpa, ipsc, and the presidents hundred competition...

Maybe I was searching on the wrong sites but I could never get a clear answer on what weapons were allowed in the presidents hundred competition?

The Presiden'ts Hundred is now handled by the CMP http://www.odcmp.com/

As far as the firearms, most can be shot with a production firearm (the 1911 is a good example).

The best thing to do is to attend one and instead of shooting on the first match, offer your services. Target pasters, refreshments, score keeper are some jobs that get tedious and having relief is welcome. You will have a chance to talk to a lot of good people and learn some things about their sport.

I had planned on getting beretta 92 for personal practice and it seems ill need one for this. Can anyone clarify, are their different groups for the .22, 9mm, and 1911 competition? Seems that if this was true everyone would run a .22.
