I'd say you handled the situation well.
I'd like to say I would have taken the apology and police route but let's be honest here, I would have told them to go fu@* themselves and then met force with force If needed.

I must admit, I probably wouldve done it too!

I see no reason to apologize for something when I'm not in the wrong. Too many times that seems to not deescalate the issue it just gives the aggressor the confidence they need to be a bigger asshat.

If the OPs story is complete and true then this yelling paranoid don't look in my yard guy needed a big ol' steamy mug of shut the hell up. Not an apology.

If you can avoid a potential violent situation then by all means do so. Legal fees will put a hole in your pocket if it goes that route. Not saying puss out or let somebody bully you but as an adult you have got to know when to let ignorant people pass by. I don't care what people say cause words don't mean anything, but you start to physically want to harm me or my family and I'm bringing the pain. Prisons are full of tough guys who couldn't turn the other cheek or avoid these type situations from escalating into a deadly encounter. As a matter of fact I saw one on dateline the other night with a war veteran

You did the right thing by not escalating the situation. There is never a winner in a physical altercation. I wouldn't have apologized. I would have ignored the guy and walked in the house. If he came up beating on my door I would have called 911 and let the police do their job. If an officer didn't arrive before it was apparent he was going to damage my door, then I would have went out to teach him the manners his mother couldn't.

Everyone is correct, your move should have been a trip to the nearest police station.

Or you could always take your post, contact State Farm, e-mail them your post and see if they can take a little longer in fixing that fence. Next time I would take them on a little ride off into the hills, if they are dumb enough to follow.

As far as the Zimmerman case goes, there is the evidence on Martin's cell phone : Pictures of a gun, women's jewelry that the proscecution hid . Maybe Martin was casing the houses for a burglary . Maybe it wasn't all Skittles after all .
Zimmmerman's tactics are questiionable . If there is a suspect in the area, I'll stay in my car until the police arrive . He had every right to get out and walk around though .
What no one has identified is the role black racism played in the case, including Obama's statement that if he had a son, the kid would look like " Trayvon " . That was racist, implying that what matters is a person's race or appearance . And there was the constant use of Martin's first name as if he were a friend or relative while Zimmerman was never called " George " .
Lesson : Don't expect justice ; avoid confrontations . Watch out for media-stirred lynch mobs .
