Stay away from the pistol grip only shotguns. Our house is alarmed so we will have warning. No kids in the house so we can stay put and ambush until the police arrive. I keep a pistol by the bed as does my wife. Her preferred weapon is an S&W 15-22 which is very reliable and a 25 round capacity. I keep a 20 gauge double coach gun loaded with #3 buck and which is very short but my preferred weapon is the AR15 loaded with 55 grain military. My wife can also handle it.

Eh, kid is on his own. He chose not to learn how to shoot. Couldn't care less about guns. Come to think about it, couldn't care less about much of anything except vampires. Hope he doesn't learn the hard way, especially since we've had a rash of robberies in the neighborhood lately. And his bedroom is on the first floor. I keep suggesting to him... Oh, well, what's a step dad gonna do?

Wife and i both have pistols at quick reach. They are useful for being armed until i can grab my ar15 and she can grab her srm 1216. My ar15 holds 61 rounds of ss109 in a 60round surefire mag with one in the chamber. Her srm 1216 holds 16 rounds of 00buck.

The levergun won the west but it was the shotgun that put the outlaws out of business and tamed the west. They didnt use birdshot either. Worrying about over penetration will get you killed. If your following the rules of self defense yourfiring at the goblin not blasting randomly around the rooms of your at the slightest bump in the nite...
