HKs will be your best choice. Pricey but the best.
It has all the safety features you need.
Thumb safety and a Decocker in one ambidextrous grip fits almost any hand size.
The d**n thing eats any ammo type.
Easy to take apart and put back very very reliable.
As far as caliber will depend on the use. I would suggest a 40 as it has good size,good speed, good price therefore effective in any intended use. Even a 9mm with expandable hollow point tip will do.
