You can do a lot better than a Hi-Point when it comes to a pistol.
But relative to the cost...it's close to impossible to do better than a Hi-Point, when it comes to a sub-$200 pistol.
Everyone's tastes, priorities, budgets, and perceived needs are different. I don't own a Hi-Point and probably never will. I have nicer guns and am appreciative that they fall within my budget. But if you told me I had just $200 to spend on my soul handgun, Hi-Point is precisely where I would start.
Just my opinion.

Everyone hates them because they look ghastly but everyone i know who has one has not had one problem with them. If youre looking for something very cheap and cant find any used handguns i would say go for it, would hurt to keep im a night stand

I had a 45. Great gun. Sorry I got rid of it. Been thinking about buying one just to throw in a backpack.

Yep, never had a problem with mine, would make a good truck gun too, not afraid to let it get scratched or if you drop it you don't freak out lol

What's with the ugly? I've owned a dozen pistols of all brands and calibers. Life only allows me a C9 and JHP 45, plus a Savage 64F today. I love my HP's. And, Just for the fun of it, there are uglier ones out there for much more $. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder BUT, as for me for some of my targets out to 50 feet from a standing position, couldn't do better. Let it rest as to each it's own but don't criticize what you don't have.
