I second the choice of a Ruger. I have a P95 as my Fall & Winter carry piece and I'm extremely happy with it. American made and priced reasonably... plus the one time I had an issue with the gun while field strip / cleaning.. I called the customer service number and the tech walked me through the fix that took about 32 seconds.

I have a hi point 9 mm and a 45. Really solid good weapons but whenever I shoot the 9 with a extended clip it jams. Another con is they are not very simple to clean. When you pull out the take down pin everything falls apart from springs to firing pins. It's ok to have a hi point only as a weapon you wanna keep at home not to conceal carry or take to the range 3 times a week. Phoenix arms also have very cheap pistols

I couldn't agree more about a Taurus. I've never had any problems with any Taurus I've owned. You can get a Taurus PT-145 Millennium Pro (45ACP) for around $350 brand new. My buddy just bought one. Mighty fine gun! It's shot everything we're fed it. Not one single glitch.

If all you want a pistol for is to sit in a drawer waiting for someone to break in the a Hi-Point should be OK because it might only be fired once or twice ever but if you want a decent, cheap handgun then a Gunshow would be your best bet you can find plenty of guns that are much better for around the same price.
