My wife carries a Kahr CM9 in her pocket with either a Ruger SR9c or a Colt Series 80 1991 model 1911.

Your wife sounds like a very intellegent lady with great taste in handguns

Reason why I say .40 is because I don't trust the 9, hate the 9, and I've heard horror stories about the 9. Just Never really liked it. I have heard stories from here at home how they can fail to stop someone and in war where they just cant seem to get the job done. I prefer her to have something a little bigger. I mean my grandmother packs a .357 magnum for Pete's sake!
I like the .40 she likes the .40. Just seeing what you guys think. I know the .40 does have the "snap" you talk about but you can counter that with correct form.

As for her experience... Well it's limited she shoots my glock every other moon but other than that not a whole lot.( it's half the idea here is to get her into the gun world)
Plus I want her to be comfortable with handguns in general

Keep in mind that the 9mm the military uses are hard ball. There are some very good defensive rounds out there. Advances in bullet design have changed the playing field from even 3 years ago. If you are set on bigger, look at the G36 which is a single stack 45ACP. About 28 oz loaded with 6+1. Another possibility might be the EMP in 40. It has enough weight to dampen the recoil. Most important get something she is willing to shoot and practice with. A 9mm might be all she is willing to shoot and it is better than nothing.

Recently shot a Glock 19, 22 and 36. 19 is a subcompact 9mm, 22 is fullsized .40 cal and 36 is subcompact .45 ACP. The 22 absolutely sucked ass as recoil went. It actually hurt after about 15 rounds because of the weird recoil, the wife and I hated it. She preferred the 19 and I preferred the 36.

Just a note... light, easy-carry single-stack.40's; Kahr CW40, Walther PPS.
