There are a lot of variables hen discussing this topic. how long is the barrel. what is the angle of the barrel. Are you aiming at something or just pointing and shooting. A 9mm is going to go a lot futher than a 45acp because the 9mm is a supersonic round and the 45 is a subsonic round for the most part.

On a related note, if in doubt, guess farther.

I had a friend in high school who shot a friend of his in the shoulder while deer hunting. The shooter could not see the shootee through the brush. Shootee's shoulder & arm are permanently fubard.

A coworker's son (prev. job) bounced a .22 off a pond shooting at a turtle; it went several hundred yards, across a state highway, and into the head of a kid playing in his yard. The coworker's son almost went to jail on it and did end up paying some medical bills, IIRC.
