I'd go with the Smith & Wesson M&P

I was actually going to buy a glock, I rented one, thought it shot well, then I shot someone elses M&P and all I can say is WOW! The M&P takes it hands down. More comfortable to shoot (ergonomics), more accurate, I loved it and I SEE why so many police departments are switching from glocks to M&P's

Another vote for the CZ 75.

Or a Beretta 92. Used is the FS, new is the 17+1 -92A1 with the 1913

rail mount under the barrel, comes with 2 extra mags, R-R-R!

If this is your first handgun I would strongly advise you to get your hands on as many 9s as possible and test them out. All the guns these guys mention are great (except the hi-point) so you'll just have to find what you like but with an 800 dollar budget your options are plentiful so do your research so you don't end up buying something you will later regret.

I agree with what has been stated already; for a range gun, all metal is the way to go. So that's another vote for CZ75B for number one pick, but a very close second is the Ruger P-series. P89 in particular is a great gun for a very reasonable price with reliability that can't be beat.

Went to buy a ruger LC9 and did not like the trigger pull on them (tried several at different stores with owners permission) so, the one store asked if I have heard of CZ, I said, yes I have, so, he handed me one CZ75B and walked out the door with it. I liked it so much that I went back and bought the CZ75 compact. Great hand gun and both are accurate. MC

I'd say go with a S&W M&P

but like someone else said up here, with a $800 price tag, you've got quite a few good options

For an $800 investment,

Stoeger/Beretta Cougar 8000 (under $400) & 2000 rds of your favorite 9mm ammo.

You will have more fun at the range, will be a more accurate shooter & will still end up with a firearm that is equal to any of the other recommendations.

You can't go wrong with a XD. Can't say I've heard the same about Taurus.

The next pistol I pick up will be a 9mm. I'll be looking for all metal, probably in the same $800 range. Top on my list for that price is the Browning Hi Power. If I'm feeling generous and go to $1200, I'll probably go with the Springfield EMP.
