Possum, I am pretty much with you, except for the .44 mag. I think that the .357 mag covers that slot. If I am ever around a Cape Buffalo, I will be carrying a long gun, If the long gun breaks while the buffalo is charging, he will be hard pressed to catch me; if he gets near, he may well slip on what I leave behind

1) 22lr rimfire- MK3 for me

2) 1911 45acp- preferrably 5" gov model

3) 3-6" 357mag- Not a carry gun for me, so I like the 5" SW 627 (8 shot)

4) Doublestack 9mm- BHP, M9, P226, Glock, XDm...whatever you like. The CZ 75b edges out BHP for me, although I own and enjoy both.

5) Dedicated carry gun- Personal preferences will be all over the map here. XDs45 is my current choice.

#1-4 seems like a pretty easy call for me. #5 is going to boil down to personal needs, lifestyle, etc. Some folks have a clear use for a woods gun more powerful than the 357mag. I really don't. A 5" 357mag will dispatch anything in my neck of the woods.

1. 22 LR handgun. Semi or six shooter doesn't matter. Great for plinking, starting young shooters off with, and varmit control.
2. 9mm. Good for self defense, cheapest ammo to buy (excluding 22 ammo), and good for target shooting.
3. .357 mag. A legend with stopping power and the ability to shoot .38 for target shooting. Also HSM makes Bear Load 180 gr for the .357 so I would feel confident carring it in the wild. So that takes the .44 mag off of my list.
4. 1911. Don't have one but its on my next to buy list. History, need I say more.
5. 380 acp. Yeah not as powerful as 2-4 but good for concealment, pocket carry, and home defense. Ammo cheaper than .357 and .45 and alittle more than 9mm. James Bond carried one, LOL!!!!!

You could probably get a conversion kit for a 17 or 19. There has to be one out there. I would like them to bring a .380 to the US. That'd be sweet.

But did I miss the point of this thread, I feel I got all of the bases covered plus one to spare.

Default My five

Thinking of this as a 'basic five' to cover most all bases and serve as the start of a proper collection:

1. .22 lr pistol. For a starter, a Ruger Target Model; for advanced collector, a S&W M41 (I prefer the shorter barrel.)

2. A .357 Magnum revolver. They are just so versatile. As a starter, a Ruger Blackhawk; for advanced, a (real) S&W Model 19. An "N" frame would be nice, but it depends on if one intends to carry it or shoot it more.

3. A serious big revolver to do whatever must be done when space is a premium. Starter would be a Ruger Super Blackhawk, possibly with a five inch barrel. Advanced is whatever the market will bear. (I have a preference for S&W 29s; the four inch is so handy.)

4. A Colt Government Model (in .45 ACP) with decent fixed sights and possibly some trigger work. For those times one may need to fight one's way out, no other handgun will quite do.

5. A proper concealment handgun. A short barreled K frame .38 Special will do; or a small size .40 S&W appeals to me a bit more. Most of the time.

I see no reason to own a 9mm pistol, other than historic value. I own a S&W M39-2 and a Browning P-35. They shoot well, but I have them more for historic reasons (part of my collection) than as part of my shooting stable.

For that matter, I don't shoot .22 lr much, either. And I see no use at all for .22 WRM (they cost too much, are way too loud and really don't do much more than the basic .22lr).

I do have some other 'odd' things in my collection, but I would not consider them as 'basic'.

Really? Do you have an "in" with Homeland Security? They seem to have the corner on the 40 S&W market these days. MHO? The "223 and 9mm will always be available" refers to the well worn SHTF scenario, not the three box limit at Cabela's.
