defensive vs. offensive handgun

What would be the qualities of a defensive versus an offensive handgun?

A good handgun should be able to do both. However, remember the old saw, a handgun should only be used until you can get to your long gun.

I like to think that a long range precision handgun could be offensive.

defensive

I would never consider my S&W 1006 as an offensive weapon even though I can easily engage targets out to 100 yards. The 46 rounds in it and on my gun belt are strictly defensive. It is to give me time to get to my trunk and go offensive with a long gun.
