Ruger. I have a bunch of Ruger single-action revolvers, and am most happy with them. I have 2 Super Blackhawks and a .41 mag Blackhawk I bought in 1987, have put thousands of hefty handloads through them, and they are still as accurate and sturdy as new. For other calibers, I have a bunch of .45 Colt Blackhawks and Vaqueros, .22 LR Single Six's, and have shot them enough to wear out most other guns, but there is no sign of any trouble with them.
Ruger.
If you are wanting it for Cowboy Action Shooting, Ruger Vaquero's were designed for that. Ruger also makes some black powder replicas that might be fun.

Default Purpose

What do you want it for ? For CAS the Vaqero is close to a Colt but the classic Flat top and Super Blackhawks set the standard for durability & simplicity.

The hunter models - Std model plus Bisley - w long barrels set up for optics n long distance.

Redhawk & Super Redhawk are hand loader friendly & customized often.

Many specialist use Ruger frames to build highly customized pieces for a variety of purposes. The SP101 Perfectled caught my attention plus a shortened Rehdhawk was a work of art.

If you have your heart set on a 44mag get a Blackhawk or redhawk. The 44mag is meant to be loaded hot. 44mag is not going to make a CAS gun. If you want a hunting or self defense round the 44mag is hard to beat. The 44mag can be a decent target load but the 357 usually does better.

Strictly speaking, I do not consider the Red Hawk, Black Hawk and the Single Ten (and now the 9) "cowboy" guns. They are similar but not a close copy of a SAA to be a true cowboy style gun.

^^^^^
agreed.
Someone posted about the vaquero. That is designed as a "cowboy gun"
From what i have heard it generally doesn't like hot loads. But every gun is different.
Whatever ruger you get you will be very pleased. As will your greatgrand kinds when you pass it on.

My Vaquero shoots better with less than max loads, so I really don't understand the desire for running a really hot load out of it. Now maybe for hunting, sure a hot load might be better, but IMO that depends on the situation. For hunting or shooting big loads, it's hard to beat a Red or Black Hawk Ruger.

Look around and find an old model Ruger Vaquero .44 Magnum. It's basically a Blackhawk frame that's been rounded off and has a channel rear sight. I had two of 'em and you can shoot anything short of a rocket out of them.

The 44mag as a whole is not a CAS caliber. People like the 45 LC because you can get/load 135 gr bullets with reduced recoil loads. When you enter a sport you get a gun for the sport. You can't just make due with whatever you want.
