If you don't keep a round count, what signs are there that one needs to change the recoil spring?

The only 357 magnum to me is the Ruger Security Six!!

I always keep an extra recoil spring. When cleaning, compare the length of the one in the gun to the new one (same manufacturer). When the used one is significantly shorter, change it out. On full size 1911's, significantly to me is a difference on 1 inch or more.
