Default Building 2 custom automatics. Help?

My dad is turning 50 (December 2013) and I wanted to do something special for him. I've decided to do custom guns for both of us. I am allowing a lot of time to complete this project.

From a young age, I've always liked firearms, but we've always been on opposite spectrums. I've always liked Russian, some European, and long guns. He's always liked American, and handguns, some shotguns.

Therefore, I thought it would be nice to meet somewhere in the middle. I want it to be a handgun, preferably, maybe a shotgun. As of now, I have Makarov PMs in mind. But I am open to suggestions. It needs to be a modern firearm, but not something that has a new age look to it, in other words, a classic design. I am also considering a 1911, PPK, 92fs, and other things like that. I don't want to venture into revolver land though. Any suggestions to other models? What would you pick (with this criteria in mind) and how would you customize it.

Basically, I'm looking for ideas.

I would go 1911, simply because I used to be a disciple of the wheel gun, and have shot several European guns, and was issued the Beretta. 1911 reigns supreme in my world.

Also, unless you get into custom building an AK or AR, your options are fairly limited in custom rifle building to bolt guns. There's a lot that can be done to a bolt gun, but... you seem to be leaning towards handguns.

I was really just wanting to make it look really nice, it won't really be for shooting. In other words, an eye piece. I like these two guns a lot, just as inspiration. I plan to do re-finishing of the metal, ( make whatever I get two-tone) custom grips, inscriptions, stenciling, etc. It will look nice.

I was considering Custom Mosin-Nagants, but I think that would appear cheap, and me-ish. However, it would be symbolic, as the first gun I ever bought was a Mosin, and we worked on it together.

Build a custom titanium-framed Caspian 1911 with a damascus steel slide.

If you go through with building it, please do post pics

Caspian or Fusion Arms 1911.

Or consider doing an AR type of rifle.
