You can get Federal Champion in 50 rd box at Wal-Mart for $17.98. The Winchester 100 round box is the same per bullet at $35.98.
That is about the cheapest that I have found with the exception of TulAmmo at Wal-Mart. I'm a little hesitant to run steel case ammo through my 1911. And you don't get the benefit of recovering some reloadable brass.

Translation- Winchester White Box.
I have also had very good results with the cheapo, non-reloadable, aluminum cased Blazer. Have one 1911 that likes that more than military match ammo or my handloads. Disgusting, but it is what it is.
You may also find some bargains with PMC, or the various on-line sources of ammo. Be sure to check shippping costs.
Better yet, get a press, dies, a copy of The ABCs of Reloading, and roll your own.

And remember that this cheap ammo should be used only in practice.

The Remington UMC at wally world is also pretty good ammo, but a tad higher. For breaking in a pistol on HPs, the Rem UMC 100 rd. box at $39 is a good deal also. Kinda iffy as a self defense ammo though. I saw water jug tests that showed good expansion & penetration, but when they added 4 layers of denim to the first jug, it clogged the point & it didn't expand. Also, over penetrated because it became same as ball ammo.

Blazer IMO is a pretty decent ammo for the price. I have used it in 9mm, .40S&W and .45acp never had any issues with it. I usually get Blazer Brass $10 for 50 rounds. But ive never had problems with the brass or aluminum.

At the same store you can buy the Tula .45 acp for around $12.00 per box/50.
I have shot a lot of it and had no problems at all.
