My mom likes her 32 auto, not sure of the brand (its pretty old) but it was made in Czech and has Nazi insignia on the barrel. However distasteful that is, my great uncle brought it back from ww 2 and the recoil is light enough that she isn't afraid to use it. Since most gun involved altercations happen at six feet or less, I don't think caliber matters. My gf insists on carrying her 357 mag but I'm sure shes scared to shoot it, of course there is the deterrence of a chick packing a big six shooter in a shoulder holster so I guess theres is that.

Maybe look at the Kahr cw9... pretty slim but not too small to be difficult to learn... no safeties to forget to disengage... and it's in 9mm giving it a reasonable level of lethality without the snappy recoil of those pocket. 380s... I don't own one yet but I have handled dozens and shot a couple...

Default Let's Be A Little More Serious Here...

Look at a little North American Arms revolver. Hornady makes .22 Mag ammo especially for these short-barreled pistols.

Maybe their Wasp in .22 Mag!? 6 oz, 5 shots, stainless steel, 1-5/8" barrel, convertible .22 LR cylinder for cheap practice. Or their 9 oz. 2" barreled Black Widow?

These are clearly more like what she'll want:
