I have even rolled deer over with my 762x54 and I dont think a .22 or.223 would do that. So I think its safe to say in this case that the 762x54 has more " knock down " power. Nice big bodied buck by the way !
The Mauser is a sweet sporterized topped off with a Leopold

when I look at gel tests, penetration and all that, at close ranges (justifiable self defense) everything from a .380 on up does a pretty bang-up job of causing hurt. Especially as it has been said, with modern ammo.

there's dead, there's real dead and there's super-really dead.....all versions of dead. If you are at 30 feet and you hit non-armored individuals with a couple of shots in the center of mass and or their head.....they are going to stop coming at you, be incapacitated etc. I see all of these examples in these threads where people claim to have heard of a guy that lived through a barrage of 9mm but some how miraculously the same guy would do backwards cartwheels if hit by just one .45................yeah, right!

I can't argue with anyone about the power a .45 will have at 50 yards versus a little itty bitty .380 (which is a 9mm round for those that didn't know). These '1 shot drop' shenanigans makes me wonder why I would need to carry a semi-auto with 12-19 bullets in the magazine if all I need is 'one shot' anyway? Sounds like all the .45 guys ought to be carrying in .44 magnum wheel guns..........

A friend has had similar results with a 22-250 loaded with Winchester ballistic tips, impressive but still not knocked down. I think the problem is with the term and now we are far away from handguns. The only answer I can come up with is sell the ones you have and get a Glock 20 with a number of spare mags and load it with some of the screamers from a company like DoubleTap ammo. That way you can have a 180 gr. bullet and high velocity and mag capacity.
But to the best of my observation, mine still hasn't knocked anything down, killed the s**t outta some stuff tho.

If you look at my original post and question .." Which of these three calibers would you stake your life on and which has the best ballistics for defense carry ? 9mm , .40 , 45 Recoil is not part of the equation...I am a bigger guy and can shoot all of these fairly well. Just curious as to which to carry."......I did not once say anything about knock down power. The guys three post down from my original thread post did and then all the crazies came out. Its quite comical ... I have all these calibers by the way and I carry my glock 21 in my automobile.

Pretty sure a head shot with any of those would have dropped a deer. I've seen several critters head shot with .22s and .223s they usually dropped where they stood.

Head shoot a badguy with a 9mm, .40, or .45 and they will probably stop an attack.
