$1000.00?? Damn! I sold my mini 14 about three years ago for $450.00 because I have an AR and the mini had been collecting dust in a closet. I also wanted to buy a lever action for deer.

Seeing that they're going for a grand now makes me sick LOL.

I agree with the others. Handguns are for mobility and concealed cary. Long guns are for home defense.

I agree with you 100%. We all have to access our needs and build a defense plan that fits us. Most of my firearms are just for fun and I have to admit that a lot of them have been pretty good investments. The Mini 14 has been mentioned. I have one in S.S. that I paid $249 for in 1985. Not much of what I have has increased in value by that much. I have enought black rifles to give DiFi nightmares. (God I wish) But whats beside my bed? A 1911 and a Marlin Camp Carbine in 45 ACP and since they take the same magazines, a couple of extra mags. I just hope that each of us are allowed to continue to make those decisions ourselves and not have them made by goverment. Its all good.

I have fire insurance on my house and I can look back on it as money wasted.

I realized three months ago that I need to do something to protect me, my family, and property. I got my wife a S&W 642 stainless, Ruger LC9 and LCR 357 for me, and a Mossberg 500 20gauge for HD.

Each weapons system has what it is best at and then each of us has what were best at with each weapon. Whatever you choose to defend yourself with is on you and there is no set up that will work for everyone. I prefer the pt840 holstered on the gun belt with 2 spare mags and my k-bar along with the rem 870

Mini 14 is a solid gun. Looks pretty sexy with a tactical stock if I do say so myself. As a personal defense or home defense weapon... Meh....
.223 being what it is has a tendency to go through the suspect, through your dry wall and insulation and into your neighbors house. Personally I'd stick with a 45acp. Lotta energy and they don't punch through everything.

You need a couple each, long guns, and a pistol- revolver or two. And your weight in ammo for them.
