Balancing out my collection...

Something kinda dawned on me the other day....I enjoy carrying, shooting and collecting pistols and it's all Ive ever done since I bought my first one. Well I came to terms with the fact that aside from having these wonderful little sidearms in my possession that in a real life crisis situation, I have nothing else....no shotguns or rifles.

In a combat situation, pistols arent the weapon of choice.

Finally decided to pawn off a couple pistols and invest in a shotgun and rifle. Already purchased the IAC Hawk 12ga shotgun which I will pick up in a couple of days. I also am leaning heavily towards the Ruger Mini 14 because I like the unique design of them and dont mind the weight. For some crazy reason, I'm not really into AR-15's at this time. I think I would prefer an AK style rifle before an AR.....but have pretty much settled on the Mini 14 as my rifle of choice. Need to bank up a few paychecks first being that they are in the $1k range now!

Anyone else own JUST pistols and thinking of diversifying your portfolio?

Nope, I see no use for rifles or shotguns in everyday defensive situations, any of them. Not home or carry. As for hunting I'm an Archer and would rather use something sporting and less disruptive and alerting. Now if the government fell and Anarchy reigned, something AK or ARish would come in handy, but I don't see this happening and bank on it not. If it does, oh well, I was wrong, I still have guns and more brains than most, I'll be fine. I don't play these fantastical frantic conspiracy theory games.

That said, I love shooting my grandpa's 30-30 lever action and my buddies Remington semiautomatic 12ga, but I love shooting pretty much anything that isn't a revolver. For me to own anything I have to be able to justify it with practical application in my life and long guns aren't too me.

I'm the opposite I mostly have rifles. And only one shotgun which is a old cheapo single shot I paid $25 for. I do own 2 Old C&R CZ's and a nagant revolver.

Long guns vs hand guns

The main purpose of handguns (pistols or revolvers. They are not the same) is to give one the ability to fight their way back to their rifle or shotgun. Handguns give one the ability to be armed when out and about without panicing the general population. When I'm on home turf I might have a handgun on me but there will be long guns of some type close at hand. If something bad happens I want every advantage I can. Just my opinion.

Good post, that's pretty much my new mindset moving ahead. All the handguns in the world wont save you in certain situations, including distance shots

I own a couple of guns. 300 hundred plus now. I love shooting them and to me it is a great hobby. I also hunt lots of species of critters, bow, muzzle loader, handgun, shotgun and rifle. If it is safe to shoot and goes BANG I want to shoot it. Just me though. Beside my bed is 2 1911's, a .12 ga. and an AR with a 30 rd mag ready to go. I haven't a clue what I might need. Hopefully nothing ever.

I guess if I'm being honest I have a rifle, if you can call it that. One of those M4 style carbines chambered in 22lr. It's more just for plinking fun than anything, worthless as defensive product.

I wish I could justify and rationalize to myself a need for a shotgun or higher powered rifle, but I just haven't been able to thus far.

I doubt anyone "NEEDS" more than 2 or 3 firearms. With me need has nothing to do with it. I like guns and enjoy collecting and shooting different kinds. I passed what I need many year ago. But as I have a lot of choices to chose from I would feel pretty stupid (not that I don't feel stupid often enough as it is) if I didn't have one if I needed it. My nearest neighbor is quarter mile away. I live on a dirt road and my driveway is 800' long and if I needed an LEO it might take 15 minutes or longer for them to respond. As they say, when seconds count law enforcment is only minutes away. I chose to be ready for what ever happens. Plus I have had to kill several stray dogs and not a few snakes over the year. I don't like killing anything and thats why I don't hunt but sometimes things need doing and I want to be equiped for those times.

And if I had that justification I would get one, I don't. It's always a to each their own thing, this is for me and me only and I have to find a purpose that my other guns or something else didn't fill in order to add something that costs so much. There is nothing for me thus long guns are useless to me. Fun sure, cool absolutely, but valueless. Is how I keep myself in check and love within my means, which I do better than anyone I've ever known or heard of and I'm extremely proud of it.
