A friend of mine had a 9mm. fire directly from his pistol magazine, he told me he was just loading the mags and accidentally he tapped the mag against a table.
My brother lives in the same house and he was sleeping in the next room, needles to say, my friend freaked out as the thought of my brother in law possibly had been injured.

Fortunately everyone was OK.

Now, I always tap my mags before I load the into my pistols, and I had never heard of something like this happening.

Has something similar happen to someone in this forum? and how do you call something like this?

Were there grains of sand or something on the table? I can only think that there was something hard, of exactly the right size and shape to mimic a firing pin that he hit against. I didn't even think enough primer would have been exposed. Cartridges are not made in a way that you could set off the primer with anything but a solid and direct pin-point strike.

Some type of external influence made it happen.

I was at the range one day when someone dropped a plastic bag of range ammo (.38spl or .357mag), and the rim from one round managed to set off a primer on another round. Blew the bag apart, and scattered ammo all over the range. Scared the hell out the guy who dropped it.

It happens.

An ND would be loud. A "non contained" firing is just a "pop".

I'd like to see the magazine as well as the shell casing.

I'd like to see the mag and spent case too. And man he must have kept that pimp hand strong

I'd ask how loud the pop was.If he says really loud then you can call BS in a quick way.I'm thinking someone thought they had an empty chamber and wanted to reset the hammer/striker. But I'd love to see that spent case and the mag for a few angles.As well as the type of ammo. and baby soft primer that had to be in it.

We used to rap M-16 magazines against a steel helmet.

IF the cartridge was not contained in a barrel, the bullet will travel only a few feet- the cartridge CASE would travel further, since it is lighter than the bullet.

Was it a mag full of reloads? Is it possible that a primer was not properly seated? If the primer was sticking out and smacked against the back of the mag, I might believe that it could happen. I would figure that the case would be deformed though. If the case looks like any other case that you pick up at the range then I would say BS too.

I would have to call BS on that as well without seeing pics of at least the magazine. Something like that happening would prolly damage the mag, IMHO.

Without the case being supported in a chamber the round of ammunition would go off like a small hand grenade. The explosive forces would tear through the thin case. The case would be destroyed and its highly unlikely the round would propel with any force.

So you see a bullet hole in the wall, or a pristine shell casing then you can safely call BS.
