Anyone Have AMT Experience?

I was up in a Roseburg gun store a few days ago and ran across an AMT Backup in 40 S&W all stainless, it looked good and felt good in my hand for the size. The only shortcoming I saw was the magazine release which was much like the Ruger .22 pistols. How's the quality of these pistols?

When the 45 first came out abuddy of mine got one. Shot pretty good, but nothing you would want to shoot a lot.

Arcadia Machine & Tool?

Here's the deal. They were an above average machining shop that got the idea to make some handguns. They are most famous for the Automag series of pistols that were made famous by Mack Bolan books and Sudden Impact with Dirty Harry.

They made waves, but they had some serious reliability issues. If you got a good one, it worked and worked well. The problem was, there wasn't many "good" ones that got out into the market.

They were named in a shi*ite load of lawsuits, so they filed for Chapter 11, then they re-bought the company with the protection of an incorporation.

Today, some of their weapons are produced by Hi Standard, a company that has changed hands a couple of times.

Personally, no matter how good the weapon feels in the hand, I would stay far away from it unless you are making a movie and can afford to add CGI.

The backup line is just that. It isn't made for quick mag swaps, and long range visits. They usually have a simple blow-back design and is surprisingly accurate for their size (mostly due to the barrel being one with the frame) It isn't a range gun, its a gun for the moment you are resorting to a backup. I know people who have them and are happy with them, but I know people who have quickly sold/traded them off. I redid one for a buddy after it had been neglected in an ammocan for 10 years in an unairconditioned garage.

It shot as well as any other blow-back .380 I wouldn't hesitate to use it as a backup, but I like my cals to start with a "4" myself.

used to have an AMT automag 22 magnum. was a helluva fun gun to shoot when it worked right. wish someone would come out with working 22mag auto loader. but i wouldnt trust a AMT for self defense based on my automag experience.

Kel Tec has an auto loader in 22 mag that's supposed to be coming to the market sometime in the second quarter of this year. Kel Tec

I have a AMT Automag long slide. It a fun pistol to shoot, well made and one of the few 22 mag auto pistols ever made. Might be for good reason. One of the guns I don't shoot often but one I wouldn't sell not so much as it is a rare pistol but because it is one of those if you have it you appreciate the quality and preformance.

I have a 45ACP back-up and actually like it, I keep it down stairs by my computer and loaded with 185 gr. JHP's. Like stated above it is not a target quality handgun but has its place as a close encounter self defense handgun..
