What is a good ammunition to carry for personal defense for S&W M&P 9?

.45 ACP 235 gr. jacket hollow point.
Big entrance wound, larger exit wound.

He said an S&W M&P 9!
Hornady critical defense is more than exceptional.

Huge question. How do you tolerate recoil, and better yet, how does your aim? Standard pressure 9's like Hydrashocks, Gold Dot, Hornady Personal Defense, etc work great. You can step up to +P and +P+ if you, and your pistol, take it in stride. Winchester Ranger SXT +P+ and Remington +P+ are great if you want the extra umph and your pistol operates correctly with them. Corbon is always out there as is Golden Saber. I suggest getting a few boxes of varying grain bullet weights and pressures and seeing what operates best in your pistol and has the highest accuracy. That is the one you should use. The hottest 9mm compared to the tamest isn't a huge spread. I like the +P+ in my Glock but it can handle it just fine.

I like Winchester Ranger T 147 gr. Opinions vary, as you can see. Any modern purpose built self defense ammo will do the job, IMHO. The most important factor is reliability in your gun. The baddest, coolest, most tactical round is useless if it won't cycle in your gun.

I was trying to make a point; I think you missed it.
Let me rephrase the question: If you have to catch a bullet, would you
rather be hit with a 9mm or .45 ACP? I'll take my chances with a 9mm.

Looks like we have a volunteer!
So you get a digital camera that makes videos, and a willing friend,go to the range, and let him shoot you point blank in the chest with a 9x19 round of your choice!
I suggest the totally pathetic 115 grain FMJ as loaded to SAAMI spec!
Post the results on Youtube, and make sure to share the link here,(or get the guy doing the shooting to do it for you, since you might be a little "preoccupied" in the ICU of the local hospital or in the morgue).
Still want to "take your chances"?
Anyway-
Choose a round that-
1.Functions well and is accurate in your gun.
2.Does not sacrifice penetration for any reason. It should at lest get 12" of penetration in any conventional ballistic gel test.
3.You are capable of shooting accurately and quickly.
If its capable of good penetration, and YOU are capable of good shot placement, thats all that matters in handgun ammo selection- everything else is an Internet argument of monumental pointless self aggrandizement and phallic measurement which has been going on,relentlessly and uselessly, since the internet was created by Al freakin Gore (lol).

For 9mm I go with Remington Golden Saber.
