Kurz is German for "short".

IIRCC,the Walther PPK design was sold to an American company because the odious and Nazi plagiarized GCA68 had provisions limiting the overall size of handguns that could be imported, and the PPK was too small.
I think it was Smith & Wesson that bought the rights to make the PPK domestically.

Also, the Walther PPK/S,a pistol made with the PP frame and the PPK barrel and slide might have been made to bypass the importation laws.

Based also on the assumption that pistols made for export to the US would not be labeled only "kurz",if your brother has a pistol labeled like that, then it might be one of the German ones made for German police or perhaps exported before the GCA68 or something.

I'm not a Walther expert, but I'm guessing your bro has an interesting and perhaps collectible piece.

FWIW, MOST auto pistol cartridges are rimless. A rimless cartridge is headspaced by the MOUTH of the case sitting against a ridge at the front of the chamber.

If you tried to chamber a shorter round than the weapon was designed to shoot, one of two things is LIKELY to happen-
1. The cartridge will be too far forward, and will not fire.
2. The cartridge will be WAY out of headspace, likely to split casing, MAY damage gun, person holding it, nearby innocent bystanders.

MOST revolver cartridges are rimmed, and headspace off the rim, making case length far less critical.

Bottom line- shoot what the gun was made to shoot. There is a lot of difference between lightning and lightning bug. Do not be misled by SIMILAR names.
