5 calibers for life
Was talking to someone about "caliber consolidation" when this senario came up: You can choose five firearm calibers (all platforms) for your current and future collection. Whether you own 2 guns or 200 guns, what five calibers would you narrow it down to?
Here's what I came up with:
9mm- Semi-auto pistols, some carbines...plenty of guns to choose from, cheap ammo
.45acp- Semi-auto pistols, some carbines...can't miss out on 1911s
.223/5.56- Some pistols (sorta), ARs and other tactical semis, bolt action rifles
.308- Bolt action rifles, M1A, FAL, AR10, etc
12 gauge- Ammo is easy to come by, and there's no shortage of exotic loads out there if you're feeling creative
Honorable Mention: .357mag, 7.62x39, 22lr

I think I would have to include .22 LR. That would mean one of your 5 would have to go. I suppose I would have to axe the 9mm in favor of the .22.

45 acp
223
12 gauge --- cant miss out on duck and goose season
.22 LR --- cheapest fun ever.
30.06 --- ammo availability, all around good big game rifle
I sure would miss my 45 LCs!

I concur with your choices, except for the 9mm would have to be replaced by the 22LR, which is probably the most versatile and affordable round there is IMO, and it can be used in various situations.

Quoted for Truth. That would be the route I would go if 5 was the limit.

Seems like the strong consensus so far is 22lr, 45acp, 223, 308, and 12ga.
No surprise, though I did anticipate some push for 357mag.

Well, as a revolver and lever gun lover, I'd go with .357 instead of 223 (besides in my country semiautos are almost impossible to own legally).
So my list would be:
22
45acp
357mag
308
12 gauge

Id have to choose 9mm over 45, since its the NATO round, worldwide availability.
NATO rounds are always good choices.
22 lr
9mm
5.56
308
I could do it with just those 4.

OK, no one call EMS, I'm just fine. (And practical)
And in this order:
22lr
9mm
223/5.56
12 ga
45 ACP
Think about it, I need no long gun, can't hit what I can't see.
Besides, I'll be with JD for that.
