5.56 vs 9mm
I have an argument with a fellow Airman about this. Which would do more damage at point blank range (within 25 ft): a 5.56mm NATO (M855) fired from an Colt M4 or a 9X19mm JHP (hollowpoint) fired from a Beretta M9? Both are fired into the sternum and no body armor is used. He says the 9mm would because although it is a pistol round, the hollowpoint is designed to "spread" on impact, thus imparting more energy on the body and the 5.56mm would just whiz through with minimal damage. I say its the 5.56mm because hollowpoint or not, the round hitting the sternum at 3100 f.p.s. is going to cause the bullet and breastplate to shatter, forcing debris into the chest with plenty of velocity. Any help would be appreciated.

I would say the person would be dead with either.

Not worth debate or discussion I would say. A waste of your time and brain power.

5.56 with out a doubt. Velocity over 3000 fps is devastating. The chances of surviving either is negligable.

+1 to the others.
Of course technically the 5.56 is going to be more effective with most COM shots. Especially since it has that magic "tumbling bullet," remember? Hahaha.

The "tumbling" was solved in the 1970's by increasing the rate of twist. Everyone who shoots a modern AR-15 knows it drills perfect holes at all ranges.

I agree with hillbilly68. That discussion is a waste of brainpower. As Airmen, it's probably better to discuss how to best utilize the 9mm and the 5.56mm at varying ranges and situations.
With that said, both rounds will kill the person rather quickly, so ballistics will be a moot point.

It's a good thing this is only a theoretical situation because lets face it. If it comes down to Airmen using guns, were pretty much F'd.
I'm allowed to mock my own service right?

You can't make me do that, I'm in the Air Force, no really even TI's(Training Instructor for those who don't know) can't make basic trainees do that. Hell I hear they even have handed out "Time-out" cards to the trainees in recent years. Most punishment I ever saw was a pulled 341 or an LOC. Oh no, paperwork how horrible!
-Disclaimer, there are a few jobs in the USAF that only take people who would qualify as easily for the Seals or any other SF team out there.
