Default .41 Magnum?

What do you think about the .41 Magnum cartridge? also what do you think are the best handguns chambered for it? i really like the .41 magnum cartridge and my favorite handgun it's chambered in is the S&W classic model 57. i would also like a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 magnum.

Amazing and oft under-rated round. It is closer to the .44 Mag in energy but closer to the .357 in felt recoil.

A big old Ruger Redhawk in .41 is what I wanted for bear-hunting in the Lower-48 and tried to get a compsct one for my Alaska trips (but had to settle for a small .44 Mag).

Fantastic in a Blackhawk and even better in a S&W 57. Should be option for LEO vs 357.

Buford Pusser of the movie (Walking Tall) fame carried a .41 magnum as his duty gun. it saved his life in a deadly shootout one time also.

Excellent round, perhaps the most underrated ctg out there. I have 4 S&Ws in .41Mag: 657PC, 657 Lew Horton, 657 no dash, 57 Mountain Gun. If you don't reload you can buy .41Mag in bulk on line for the same cost as .44Mag. And you can buy .41Special (Reeds Ammo and others) which is a nice range load and a heck of a good self defense round.

very good caliber and for sure underrated and treated like a bastard child! shame it never got the respect it deserved, kind of the Rodney Dangerfield of cartridges. excellent ballistics and even manageable recoil for such a large caliber. made an excellent short range hunting caliber when loaded with the proper ammo. too bad they didn't make more of them.

its a good cartridge but the reason it never took off is the 357magnum was already cornering the police market and the 44magnum was cornering the hunting sector. its a round that tried to both and didnt quite make it.

my preference is for the 45colt. i regret selling my ruger blackhawk chambered for it.

It's an awesome round and one that I constantly look for a revolver chambered in.

Its one high on the wish list here for sure.

Once i bag a Redhawk or super redhawk in 44 mag to go with my Ruger M-44 Carbine i am gonna start hunting a 41 wheel gun....then prolly hunt down a lever gun to match!!

Actually the 41 was the orginal route i was gonna go...but got detoured.

Elmer Kieth pushed the .41 Mag. for LEOs. S&W offered a police Mdl. 58 4" HB fixed sights only. We bought 4 of these that had belonged to the SFPD Motor Cycle Patrol in 1979. They were great handguns. The PDs were moving away from revolvers to 9MM Autos at that time. The PDs were recruting female officers as well. The day of the big 6 guns was over in American law enforcement. I recall the Casper Wyoming PDs had to give up their Mdl. 29 .44 Mags. Many small town PDs were issued S&W Mdl. 25-5 .45 Colts in those days as well.
