I am a big proponent of the .357 Mag as the bais for a handgun collection, BUT.....
Taurus does not have the best reputation. Some people have had great luck with them, others have had nothing but trouble. I would much rather have a good used Smith and Wesson or Ruger revolver over any Taurus (new or otherwise).

The Stoeger Cougar is a Beretta made at an alternative (Turkish) factory. The Cougar is a neat gun. Rotating barrel. Great feeling grip. Given the two choices, I would go Stoeger.

A .40 is adequate for your part of the country. Not ideal, but adequate.

When I go hunting here in south central Georgia I always pack my S&W 686 357 mag. Of course our hunting is mostly in bush. But I also have 40 S&W and its my ccw and home defense weapon. You could not go wrong with either. Please post pictures.

One piece of advice. I know the ammo situation right now is kind of tight but try and run as much ammo through that gun as possible before relying on it. Some new guns require a "break in" before they will work reliably. Others unfortunately come with defects from the factory which require some use to show up.

In normal circumstances, my rule of thumb is to run 200 rounds of FMJ through a semi auto and another 50 rounds of whichever JHP you chose to use before I consider using a pistol for SD. I know some people who insist on even more.

I can understand its hard to even lay you hands on that much ammo right now, but do try and test out your new gun the best you can.

Good job. Sounds like you're getting the things you need for pretty reasonable prices. Wish I could say the same. Wish I could find ammo at all, for that matter.

I own a .40 Cougar and its great for up close self-defense but the trigger is so bad that it would be hard to hit accurately at any distance, I also own a .357 Taurus and it is accurate at any reasonable distance shooting in single action = you nead at least 4 to 5" of barrel length to accomplish this. Sir, unless your in a BIG hurry I would recomend a Glock in .40 the model 23 is my favorite (there is a reason why most law enforcement use Glock .40's) when things calm down you should be able to get one for about $500 new. Shop online if your local dealer wont come close to that price. IMHO

at my local wal mart ammo is beginning to stay on the shelves a little longer, the lady said that the rifle ammo is starting to stay to a poiint that they have some in stock everyday. the pistol ammo was leaving within a few hours but she said the 9-40-and 45 had been there more than a day and they still had a couple boxes each. she said 380 was still hard to keep and 22lr was mia.
