People were taking bear and hogs with muskets all the time a couple hundred years ago. Doesn't mean I'd strap one to my ankle. Self defense rounds have standards to meet in order to be considered reliable and a good choice. The .380 does not meet those standards. Pretty simple stuff. Like I said they're fun to shoot and fun to plink with. Just not ideal for self defense.

Edit: Also, I don't have to "justify" buying a 9mm dude. Thats kindof rude. I have multiple guns in multiple calibers. I buy what I want and I put a lot of research into what I buy. That way I know what I can rely on it to do and what I can't rely on it to do.

There are enough "SD/HD Rounds" or "combat" rounds out for the .380. I do like to shoot the "smaller" calibers (22LR/Mag, 32ACP & 380ACP,.. But no way they would ever be a "primary" weapon unless I really had no choice,..I'd even carry one of my revolvers before one of the small autos,....even though I can fit my PPK/s in 22LR in my front right pants pocket or in the front cargo pocket of my "Ranger Cargo Shorts" or their long legged brothers....

Even the .380 premium bonded hollow points don't meet the FBI Penetration Standards. I believe the smallest round that does is a 38spl.

I don't know numbers off hand but I know a lot of people use FMJs in 380 because they penetrate more than HPs.

Brassfetcher.com did some gelatin tests with quite a few rounds. It's not a full FBI Penetration Standard test, they only did bare gelatin and a few rounds with summer or winter clothing.

(Can be found here http://www.brassfetcher.com/380ACP%20ammunition%20performance%20in%20ballistic %20gelatin.pdf)

Only the federal rounds averaged (barely) at 12". All of the FMJs had too much penetration except the Winchester 95gr FMJ. And that round had the 2nd tiniest wound channel out of every round shot. The federal rounds wouldn't pass the other tests, they barely passed bare gelatin. All poor options for self defense especially compared with 38spl-.45 as you can see for yourself:

Just picked up a bodyguard today, put a box of fmj's through it and love the gun. Fits so nicely in a pocket, laser was dead on, and minimum recoil for such a short barrel. The .380 might not b a one shot kill or penetrate the best but when a full size .40 or .357 mag isn't an option, I'm betting the .380 still wouldn't feel good and do more damage than a sharp stick. My bodyguard is here to stay for sure

At this point .380 is the only caliber I stock that I can't find at least moderately regularly, so it must be popular with somebody.

Or they aren't making as much cuz they're not selling as much. ;-) [JK]

Joking aside, you must not have tried to find 22LR or 9mm lately. We had to special order our 9mm. And we couldnt even find 22LR online until a couple of weeks ago. Neither was in stock anywhere around here and this is a major metropolitan area. People are buying everything up that the Fed's unnecessary ammo purchases allow to make it to the shelves.

I put the 380 right up there with the 32 ACP. Wasn't fond of 'em years ago, not losing any popularity with me.
