Hi all - newbie and really enjoy the forums here. I've been shooting .22 rifles, trap/skeet on and off for years, but am a newbie in the grand scheme of things. I've recently taken two pistol courses and have been going to the range regularly to practice and rent several pistols. My use is basically recreational, maybe do some local competition stuff down the road if/when I become proficient. I'm looking at 9mm at this point for price and practice, and will eventually add .45 as an option for CC. Of course I live in Illinios, so I may end up with my index finger and thumb for home defense shortly.

So far I've shot Sig, S&W, Ruger, FN, and Springfield in 9 and 40. By far, the Sig 226 base model fit my hand like a glove and shot like an extension of my body. The FNX and XD(M) were close contenders. Grips were pretty comfortable and shot placement at various distances were acceptable. The S&W M&P9 felt like the Sig in my hand, but I wasn't crazy about the trigger. Ruger SR9 was nice as well. Last tidbit - I'm lefty. I've adapted and am comfortable with the Sig and XD(M).

I think I have my decision down to the following 3-4 guns. Only negative to the Sig is obviously the price. I can do it, but wanted some opinions before laying out that kind of dough. Will probably end up installing trijicon sights.

226 Nitron or MK-25 9mm
FNX-9
XD(M) 4.5" 9mm

Thanks for any advice you can offer. Fortunately there are two ranges in the area where I can rent most popular models.

I love my 226, actually I love both my Sigs. I believe Trip enjoyed shooting my 226 as well. My only complaint is, it seems unusually large, I have a 226 Navy though, it may be bigger than the 226.

I'm a big fan of S&W. I use a 5946 (5906) and a 3953 TSW as a CCW with Gold Dot 124 +P. Work flawlessly. I took my wife shooting for first time, and she fell in love with the 5946.

I very much enjoyed your 226. I really looked not having to reload as often, and it soaked up recoil great. But I think you liked handling my gun too...

That's kind of a strange statement. Just because a gun is striker fired doesn't make it any better.

So do you plan on carrying with one in the chamber in the other guns you listed?

Well I can tell I don't have any friends on here. Y'all just let me buy a glock. Dint try to stop me or anything. I still regret it. Only up side to this dang thing is its ugly. So scratches and holster ware won't bother me.

The M&P9 is a great gun and you can get an Apex Tactical trigger lot for it. However I don't think you'll be able to CC with it. Maybe the 9c but not the full size. Some models come with a manual safety if you're worried about that

I vote Sig, I own 3 and also carry a Sig p229 in DAK at work. The best looking and most reliable IMHO.

If you want to play run and shoot games the XD is the way to go. While the rules are written so all guns are equal. SO's don't always go by the rules - they tend to make them up as they go. For example I have a Ruger P95. Every SO I have encountered demands I handle the gun with the decocker engaged, despite the fact I have a IPDA ruling that SA/DA with the safety on the slide are competitors choice. They are like comply or go home. So I struggle through a match. I have decided I am not going to play with stupid any longer.
