I agree with the above majority -- go with a 3 or 4 inch 357 revolver. It's a great, foolproof gun that will never let you down. Either a Smith or a Ruger is very easy to handle, natural to point and shoot, or to aim and shoot, and is relatively inexpensive both to buy and to feed. I've got a 1972 model 36 Smith in 38 that is as good and reliable as the day I bought it. All any gun needs is a little TLC.
