Got a gun.

Went to the pawn shop just to see what they had.

They had a decent (but very well used) SxS with exposed hammers I liked for $200. One of the hammers wouldn't lock back though. They said they would have a gunsmith look at it.

They didn't have many other SXSs, so I looked at pumps. They had a decent New Haven (Mossberg) 12 GA with a ribbed 28" barrel and modified choke that I liked. It came home with me.

It needs a little TLC, but mostly for cosmetic issues. The wood is a little dinged up, and there is a little rust on the barrel. Easy fix. The action functions smoothly.

From what I have read, it is basically a Mossberg M500.

I got it for $170 plus tax.

That's MUCH cheaper than I could find anything online for other than old bolt action shotguns and single shots.

i'll be looking for it. thanks.
what choke type is in the mossy 500? is it fixed or screw in's?

on the sbs...
check to see if you can open bbls with the hammer cocked back.
make 100% sure that gun is SAFE or it will spend the shoot in your trunk. get the smith to give it a thumbs up for 150 rounds of bird shot.
i get nervous when i hear well used....and its a rabbit ear gun.
find out what the chokes are in it too.

I'm not going to get the SXS. I have other projects I want to do first. The lock up on it was a little wobbly (not real bad). It's definitely seen some use. I would say it was at least 70+ years old. I had to check the barrel to make sure it wasn't Damascus, if that tells you how old it looked.

I'll have to check on the New Haven. If it is fixed, would that be a big problem?

I put 5 rounds of 00 through it today. It runs pretty good, but there is a problem with the ejection. It does of an ejector in it, and it does work, but it's very weak. Any way to fix this, or should I just replace the ejector?

IIRC, the ejector is a very simple and inexpensive part. I would just replace it if so.

If that's a case, it definitely gets a new ejector.

Other than that one problem, I love it.

The kick was nice and light. May need a recoil pad if I'm going to put 100-200 shells through it in a day, but for regular shooting, it's very comfortable.

I'll see if I can get some pics.

whew, good!

cheapest pad is a slip on. pachmyer or kickezz makes them.
contact ozarkfrog about ejection problems. he shot your exact gun and it plaqued him the entire match. 1/2 qt of oil helped, but it was a pain.

as mentioned earlier youll need 2 or 3 chokes for this meet. IC/MOD/FULL.
if all you have is mod, youll do ok on 16 yd ata trap, skeet, & int skeet.
but doc adams, poor mans 5 stand, annie oakley, and the shoot off....kiss the trophy goodbye along with 4 boxes of good ammo.

remember, youre only as good as your gun will allow you.
good gun, good match.
cheap gun, cheap results.
i will let anyone shoot whatever they want at my place. and i will always make suggestions to improve. 90% of the guys that come here end up behind my range gun...because i supply good guns to get good results. the other 10% just burn up ammo.

this is why people that shoot a lot, buy nice guns. theyre made to take it and they dont kick as bad. last thing a guy who just traveled 2000 miles to a match wants is a gun to break or jam. a broken gun cost me the olympic dream back in the atlanta trials. and i didnt have a backup. i kicked myself all the way back to va. i could have been on the team where kim rhodes got her first medal.
