Default Anyone testing out the new straightwall cartridges this whitetail season?

been researching the 460 and 500 S&W a lot lately and cant find much info. Many say just look at the 450 bushmaster but no real info on the calibers I am interested in.
I am very curious on ballistics and trajectories for both out of 20" kathadin barrels and also custom 26" barrels. I am looking more at a 460 MGM barrel right now just because of the flatter trajectory but have also seen some custom loads for the 500 that are flat also. I am reloading so ammo cost is no difference just the barrel for my encore. Anyone with ANY info at all I would greatly appreciate it.

cts,

If you are interested in a rifle as in the AR 15 Platform I would suggest the 458 SOCOM. Great deer round and legal in states like Indiana and others. Here is our last kill on November 9th. this year with the 458 SOCOM Barns 300 gr. Shock-X. Also the Hornady 325 gr.FTX is great for deer, pigs and other animals.
And there are several companies producing it or you can load your own! Easy to reload and many members here are loading it! My Rock River Arms 16" barrel shoots 1 MOA Groups at 100 yards and 200 is no big deal.

Thanks for the knowledge but we can't use necked down cases in MI. Did some research and does look like a pretty sweet round though.

i would suggest a 45-70 if you want a great handload friendly straight wall.

the issue with the 500 and 460 is they use pistol bullets. they are typically not very sturdy for large game like bear buffalo elk moose. on deer it really doesnt matter.

my favorite rifle rounds all use .458 diameter bullets. my favorite rifle is the winchester model 70 in 458 winmag. it can be loaded down to very light 300 grain 45-70 loads all the way to 510+ grain elephant bullets

I would check with your local game and fish commission before I went out and bought a 45-70. The 45-70 appears to be straight walled but it is actually a tapered cartridge. If the state is splitting hairs the 45-70 may not be considered a straight wall cartridge.

Basically this law allows for rifles in handgun calibers, a 45-70 is too long etc. I am lucky, my county is one of the most northern counties that allows for almost unlimited private land antlerless licenses, yet I just so happen to be only 5 miles north of the shotgun only line and can use any rifle I want. That being said, I didn't see a dang thing in November.

Just for me, i'm looking for a rifle to use the .45 Colt (long Colt if you want). Primary reason, already have hunting hand gun chambered for .45 Colt and is ok for whitetail, not after buffalo or elk in Southern lower Michigan.

Have you thought about this? Its called 45 Raptor. Its basically a 460 S&W that fits the AR10 platform. Its made using cut down 308 brass and a 300 grain .452 bullet. Its formed in 460 S&W dies, the only difference is the head is 308 to fit the AR10 bolt. Ballistics on this are pretty awsome, it shoots very flat for a large round. I'm on the fence about it right now myself. I think it could be a great pig bullet down here in Texas. Just another reason to get another new AR. I'm considering it as a second upper for my AR10 build..

They offered barrels for the AR10 and the Rem 700 now. An Encore barrel may be a simple addon for them. Plus its specifically Michigan/Indiana legal..

hands down best 45colt rifle is the uberti 1873, it is closely followed by the winchester 1873 which is not as close to original as the uberti, a very very distant third is the marlin 1894.

rossi and henry also make 45 colt rifles. the rossi's generally need a lot of work to get running right. the henry rifles are very very heavy and have very poor balance.

I thought about getting either a marlin lever gun in .44 mag or the Ruger bolt action .44 mag simply because I have 800-1000 once fired .44 mag brass laying around.
