First you have to provide more info than just Illinois. Since I used to live
in Plainfield, I am somewhat familiar with you locale. First, what county do
you live in, call their Sheriff and confirm, do not take my word for fact.
In general, in IL, if you live in a rural setting (by rural I mean not in a town
or sub-division, and not all sub-divisions are incorporated) if you do the
following you will be fine.
First, it is state law that if you are shooting on your property your bullets,
shot, etc. must not leave your property. Either own enough land or
construct a sufficient backstop.
Second have a valid Foid card.
Failure of either will cause you legal misery.
In general, be considerate of your neighbors, shooting after 8AM and before
sunset is considered a good guideline.
Sheriff and Police require a Warrant to come on your property, the DNR does
not, it is not uncommon for the local police or Sheriff to call DNR to
investigate someone shooting.
Back in the early 90's I used to hunt the old RR bed along the east side of
Rt. 30 north of town. Doubt you can do that any more. Being a volunteer
on the PFD helped with the farmers back then.
