Yukon Men…a grievance

I’m watching this show and these remote residents have as many as 18 dogs. In preparation for winter they need to stock pile fish for these dogs. They are after 'King Salmon' and they are complaining about a disease that have affected these Salmon, in addition the ‘run’ for the year is not that good anyway. Now…me being a sport fisherman, I believe in catch and release for certain species of fish and in certain areas.

These guys have to feed there dogs ‘Kings’!? 18 dogs…all winter…that’s a lot of flippin’ fish and it’s only one family they are spotlighting here. How many others have to do this?

They can’t develop fish farms for rough fish like Carp, Suckers and Catfish for this purpose?

…this chaps my a**!

They probably look at sport fisherman the same way. I dont mean that negatively but thats their way of life.

Sure...but the resource is getting scarcer..you have to adapt. I was up their in June...I caught a 30 lb King on a spinning reel, I had my picture taken and released it...just as the law requires.

My way of life is...shooting as many Whitetail Deer as I can. I use the meat to bait Wolves and then shoot as many of those I can get my sights on. And.... my cat likes Eagle meat :D

They depend on dogs like we do cars & trucks, they can't afford gas to fuel there vehicle and not many stores carry enough dog food. They are living within their means and surviving with very little waste and carbon footprint. If SHTF for us, life for us would change drastically, for them not so much.

I never said I had a problem with the use of dogs to live

I am sure they use any meat they bring in, starting with the most abundant.

Sounds like you just need to get a couple of gallons of chapstick.

You arent paying very close attention!

The kings are for human consumption...the chums or what they call "dog" fish and all the other fish they catch are for the dogs...they also use the guts, head, and other "unsavory" parts of the kings for the dog feed.

Really...ok I was listening with half an ear. I do remember them catching a dog fish and mentioning the dogs would eat it. But I missed them actually targeting dog fish...my bad.

Mods!...you may vaporize this thread at any time.
