As far as China goes you realize how many people the Chinese gov. Has killed for trying to worship? To many. That can make a village Atheist real fast.
But you are correct there are a % of Buddhist in those countries. Just like There are Catholics in Egypt.
I don't know for sure, and you seem like you know more about it than I do, but isn't it illegal to practice Christianity in China, not necessarily ALL religion? That's what I always thought, that they could worship, just can't worship Jesus...

Trip, have you been gone so long as to not know how a thread goes left at the bridge.

I had heard that christianity was growing in china. To be sure I searched a little and it seems correct.

I also support freedom of religion to it's fullest because of the constitution. I believe in it & support it because I know the government would love to get rid of it. Although I wouldn't consider myself a religious man, I also realize one of the main reasons were not like China,Japan & other atheist countries is it keeps the people from worshipping the government or Emperors of the world.

Although I must admit that I get tired of church groups getting more laws passed & old laws strengthened, but once a Government always a government. I don't need either to tell me how I'm suppose to lead my life.
religion as a control tool is an old saw that communist atheists came up with in the 1960's to help supress reliion in america.

religion has been used from time to time to control groups of people but that isnt the origin or purpose. religions, with the exception of ones like scientology, were created to explain life and death where people animals and the world come from.

that doesnt mean evil men and women havent used religion as a club but thats not the purpose.

Atheism was around way before the sixties. it does seem perfectly logical that the hippies would push atheism. Try to get the sheep to stop giving there money to churches & give it to the gov. The 60's generation defiantly have made the country worse & continue to take us to the eighth plank if you know what I mean. The thing that really shakes my Moxie is knowing I'll end up paying there social security for the next 50 years.
But with all the communist movements led by FDR makes the old Hippies look like Rush Limbaugh.

I don't really see how anyone can find a true purpose to religion. If I was a gambling man I'd say the original bible was most likely 5 pages at most. Written & rewritten to the point that no one will ever be able to figure it out. There may or may not have been a Jesus but I highly doubt he was the son of some super hero with super human powers. In my younger days I read the old testament & new. I found the stories to be ridiculous. The stories were obviously written for people with little to no education. Back in those days people didn't travel, read, right, no Internet or TV let alone science.
As far as the origin of the first religion. It's doubtful that anyone will be able to figure it out. I guess if you believe in Christianity, jewish or Muslim beliefs than religion started when the earth was still molten lava. I will stick with the humans being the aliens just so I can say I didn't evolve from monkey's & lizards or super hero's.

When you see someone with metal rods in his back bend over in what 5 minutes ago would have been impossible, it will change your mind.

When you see a man who hadn't been able to use his hands for five years due to an auto accident cry like a baby because he could move his hands again, it will change your mind.

When you get a phone call from a woman who two weeks before had been diagnosed with uterine cancer tell you the doctors don't understand it but the cancer is gone, it will change your mind.

When you see a woman who was blind in her left eye read a poster on a wall 50 feet away with her right eye covered that I can't even read, it will change your mind.

There is God, and He's doing great and astounding things every day.

Ever heard of "Jesus hippies"? I had a roomate whose parents were "Jesus hippies", really cool people IMO. Apparently, a bunch of the kids who went to Cali back in the 60's found what they were looking in the Christian religion and made their communes into churches of a sort. This bunch left the commune to return to Memphis, TN where some of the members originated. The group proceeded to settle in the same groovy neighborhood and still have their own community church meeting in members' homes so far as i know (i lost touch with them a bit). Generally very kind and groovy people, but a bit left of my center on some issues.

As far as a purpose to religion, you must be joking. Who hasn't wondered, at least in their pre-education youth, about where thunder or lightning comes from or why the plants bloom and bring forth fruit in the Spring or (the biggie) what happens to people after they leave us behind to go under the dirt? In the old Roman and Greek religions (as with others like that of the Norsemen) the different forces of nature that were beyond contemporary human understanding were given names and regarded as deities for their power over mankind. Thunder & lightening were probably some of the more frightening naturally occuring forces of those days and were credited to such powerful deities as Thor or Zeus. The Ancient Egyptians had a deity to explain the Sun, the power behind all life on this planet, Ra.

It is my belief that atheism is quite possibly a simple expression of man's pride in his own intellect at explaining so many of these elements of nature that he didn't understand in our species infancy. The last remaining deity-level mystery seems to be the one regarding the origins of man and final destination of that which we think makes us different from the other animals.

Me, i don't really know for sure; i am a superstitious agnostic, basically.
