That hybrid Volkswagen XL1 gets more than 250 mpg! Not completely electric, but efficient. Looks awful.

What will the "Cottage Industry" known as the Green movement do when a viable electric automobile is invented? They will declare that electric cars are causing the sun to decay. Oh my !! We will all die.

Trains have been hybrids for many decades now. Very fuel efficient and plenty of power. The auto industry is doing the hybrid thing wrong. Heavy trucks and autos should be doing he hybrid thing just like the trains.

Do you really care? I mean you don't give a damn about them or what they say now.

You can ship one ton of material nearly 500 miles on one gallon of diesel by rail. Of course there is an economy of scale and all, while you can only load so much cargo on a truck, a railroad can take all you can load onto it, just add more locomotives. That explains the efficiency and it does not quite translate directly to cars or trucks.

But you are pretty much correct. VW looks like it has the best approach, so much so that they are being put into limited production in Europe.

The American economy depends on fast redistribution of goods. It will always require millions of conveyances to deliver the goods from rail points. Trains can not deliver individual cargo to the consumers. In times of very tight economic conditions capital cannot be invested in products. The seller and consumer depends on fast order and delivery. American business is more complicated than Socialist wet dreams. Obama did you hear me?

Was there a relevant point in there or are you just taking this opportunity to rant against Obama......... Again and again and again?

You are absolutely correct about distribution of goods. This is an absolutely critical element in our society. I would be surprised if there aren't viable and affordable over-the-road semi-tractors on the market within the next 10 years. Perhaps sooner. They already have short-haul hybrid trucks in use today.

They're starting to figure it out. The Volt was the first attempt. It failed miserably as it was brought to market by political pressures much too soon. Give it a few more years, and I think you'll see direct electric drive vehicles that are much more marketable.

As long as the govt is directly involved and as long as there is a cheaper viable alternative, we won't get it right. Necessity is the mother of invention
