I stopped smoking cigs 35 years ago...but even if I was still,...that would never happen.

Very creative, I never w have thought of that. I still can't get the image of the crime fighting pen or chicken wing out of my mind.

Pens used to disappear in the Army at a supernatural rate. DOD w order them by the billion but there was never one around when you needed it.

One day an individual brought in a single shot, break action 22 LR to the gunstore I work at. His grandson had borrowed the rifle and when he finished "cleaned" it by taking a 30 caliber rod with a 30 cal brass brush on it and hammered it into the muzzle about 6 or 8 inches and then took a hacksaw and cut it off and put it back in the safe so he wouldn't get into trouble. We couldn't remove the rod. He had to buy a new barrel.

I still occasionally find a black ink pen stamped US Government
when I dig through my old stuff, and they still work, I got out in '91.

Pupae: Mom died and I gathered up everything that was at her house and brought it home. Most of them had been hanging in rifle racks hidden in the closets.

First thing I did was run a lightly oiled patch down the barrel to clean it out and be sure they were clear.

There was a Mauser 98, that Dad had sporterized and rebarreled to 257-Roberts. I pushed some kind of bug eggs or pupae out of the barrel. After a good cleaning it shot a 3/4-inch, five shot group, with factory ammo. So, I guess they didn't harm anything.

I need to put a different stock on it, to really shoot it much. Mom was 5-1, so Dad built the length of pull at 12-inches for her. I feel really scrunched up when I shoot it.

The reason they were so popular was they were so well built.

Potheads would build pipes with them. They were scavenged, for their

parts, for all sorts of repairs. They were one of the ultimate "make do"

devices, for servicemen at duty overseas.

Great thread!

Love the $1000 skunk story. I could see that happening.

A buddy of mine's grandfather was a gunsmith many years ago and he had the barrel from a S&W .38 that he had replaced. The barrel has five squibs stacked on top of each other. He machined off a section of the length so you could see the whole stack of jacketed lead. It was actually pretty cool, and he used it as a testament to the ruggedness of S&W pistols. Grandpa passed away a couple of years ago. I wonder what happened to that barrel.
