Ham and egg C-rations. Those things were canned before I was born. Between the ham and eggs and the 5 pack of Chesterfield cigarettes I think the Army was trying to kill me.

I was an adviser to the Vietnamese Army before the conflict started and was subjected to many gross looking food items. The worst I encountered was hot vit lon, a half hatched duck egg. I could not get by the smell or the look. I did eat a lot of chicken soup, but they used monkey in lieu of chicken and it wasn't bad. I learned very quickly that almost anything tastes good when you are hungry......even c-ration ham and eggs that were canned in 1942 and even the little four pack of Wings cigarettes were great.

Amen to that!

i used to work in a local fish market about a decade ago, and the owner insisted that every employee try all of the offerings at least once. Now I have a very strong stomach, but that stuff just made me gag. Ate one piece to placate him, and never handled it again unless it was for a customer. If given the choice between cleaning the smoke house with my toothbrush or eating another piece of pickled herring again, I would willingly climb into the smokehouse with my toothbrush in hand.

Worst job in the place was cleaning that smoke house. Thank God they had a shower at that market! The only bright side was they would give me half a salmon, and a lake trout every time I did the job, smoked of course, in addition to my pay. D@mn I miss that place!

A four pack? Well, it has been a long time, and unpleasant things fade. The only smokes I remember are Chesterfield, Lucky Strike, and some menthol thing that I wouldn't smoke. The Wings aren't ringing a bell. I guess I got lucky.

Did anybody ever figure out why the ham had a blue sheen to it?

Oddly enough, I liked the green eggs and ham, took some getting used to the color but once I did, it wasnt bad at all! I didnt like the spaghetti, reminded me of red grout! C-rats always gave me instant constipation, MRE's werent much better but they tasted a bit better (Loved the freeze dried strawberries, yummy).

A year or two before I retired the Chow hall started using Tray Packs for hots, they were just bulk MRE's, not so tasty...
