im thinking something to do with a butane tank burner that is used for melting or heating irons to use on roofs and lead.

Could have been used with butane, but there was a device called a plumbers gasoline furnace- like a vertical blowtorch, used to heat an iron pot of lead for doing pipe joints on cast iron drain lines.
THAT looks like the heat diffuser on the burner.
What we have here is... failure- to communicate.
thats it. dad has one. its the same tank used on bbq grills.
