That as the 1sdt thing I thought of when I looked at the pic.I hgave seen some of these back in th eday that you had to push in to turn when on things that you didn't want to move around once set but you needed the smooth turn to get an exact setting.

Could be for an oven..Those type controls work very much like a rheostat.

now the bonus would be to run the numbers and see what oven its for! he has 4 rents and the ovens are still in them!

I'm seeing big things here Bobski , like perhaps a reality show featuring ..,
This ole do-hickey appliance repair guy.! Bob Villa , eat yur heart out ..!

Well , we can test this thingy out ..! We can use my wife's tongue , she is pretty amped right about now , and the theme of your first big show could be (the human ohm meter) with major resistance..! .. just kidding , would not want my wife to hurt us..!

As you deduced it looks like a rheostat for an electric range or some similar device. One night after a couple of adult beverages a friend and I decided to cook something to eat and forgot about the push in to turn factor, busting a couple of knobs on the wife's new range! Not sure what she got so upset about it was nothing I could not fix for 40 or 50 bucks.

If you had the knob it would say OVEN........We have one on our gas stove that has the glow plug in the oven to light the gas...........
