i live in a forest and 2 months after we moved in in 2004 there was a very small forest fire across the road. CDF was on it: helicoptered in firefighters, dumped fire retardant on our house and the fire, etc........and they politely pointed out how if the fire got out of hand it would come up the mountain to our place. they also politely pointed out that in california effective jan 1, 2005 all property owners were to have a defensible clearing of 100 feet around their home. they also said that they won't attempt to save homes not in compliance with the law but would try to keep the fire from going beyond said home. in this area the fire danger is bad and the hills steep and wooded....and over populated with humans if the truth were to be told.
we're pretty much in compliance with that......but most of the people in this area are not. so my message is don't blame the tree huggers for the lack of responsiblity of homeowners some of which are too lazy to care for their property and don't care if they're a danger to their neighbors or the region. those of us that decide to live in the forest [or bush for that matter] also have an obligation to do so responsibly....and i see that sorely lacking in this area.
movie zombie [and yes we took down trees...but not the redwoods...to get that defensible space. ]
