To me using THE is claiming ownership or somewhat of a lack of respect for your wife or girlfriend. I mean you wouldn't say me and THE mother and father went to a family picnic.. you'd say me and MY mother and father.

So why not Me and MY wife went.....

Any thoughts or comments?

My wife and I...perhaps?

C3, CA, Walley, I truly feel for you for the suffering and pain that you and yours have to endure. YOU AND YOURS ARE IN MY PRAYERS!

My sympathies for y'all who are liming through health problems with your spouses. "My" wife gave us a scare a few years ago that turned out to be much less serious than we were first led to believe. It was a tremendous relief to find out that we weren't facing a liver transplant or death before she was 40. That worried me a lot!

Luckily she is well and "the" wife is also "my" girlfriend.

In most cases (but not all), I refer to my wife as "The Ol'lady" and if I need her for something, the request typically begins with “Hey woman…”
We have a pretty twisted sense of humor though. I’m referred to as “The pay check” and her requests begin “Damn it Michael…”

Generally in the third person I refer to The Lovely Mrs as The Lovely Mrs. First person is generally Babe or Sweet Patootie.

Sweet Patootie? Isn't that from one of the Peanuts characters? Or is it Sweet Baboo?

I am unaware of a Peanuts connection but one never knows.
