"The wife"

Maybe it's just me but I've noticed recently that guys when talking about their wives or girlfriends will say "me and THE wife are going...., or THE wife and I will be... or me and THE girlfriend went to.....

It's like saying me and THE dog went for a walk.

To me using THE is claiming ownership or somewhat of a lack of respect for your wife or girlfriend. I mean you wouldn't say me and THE mother and father went to a family picnic.. you'd say me and MY mother and father.

So why not Me and MY wife went.....

Any thoughts or comments?

I would think saying MY wife would literally imply ownership.

I think this is more tone and context. Depending upon the use the terms, whatever they may be, the way they are used is the key.

Would that be "THE" CA or "MY" CA will nuke it?

It is 'the' wife as opposed to 'the other wife'. How's "Number 4 and I might be there a little late."

Normally I show the respect by mentioning the lady first. ;)

I always say my wife and I when I talk about anything we do together. When I want to get her goat I say "She Who Must Be Obayed.

I say the wife, and my wife. I believe God gave my wife to me. So you might say i do claim ownership over her. I would be right upset if someone else claimed ownership over her thats for sure.
