A recent article appeared in our local paper attesting to the woes of the County Sheriff's Office due to budgetary cutbacks. The area of the county I live in is remote to begin with and the nearest Sheriff is generally 1 1/2 hours away. Response from the city, where I am only 3/4 of a mile from its jurisdiction, is not probable unless a violent crime is in progress. The State Police have an office in town but cannot afford staffing 24/7. When staffed, it is by one officer who covers an unmanageable area easily in excess of 100 sq. miles.
In the article the Sheriff stated they were having to cut back on patrols and staffing in the county and that every criminal knew it. Well, if they didn't; after the paper ran the article, those that could read did.
Will I wear my side arm more frequently...YES!! Will I quit making fun of the wife when she makes security rounds before we retire in the evening...YES!
