I've got a couple friends who commute back and forth from Oregon to work on Wyoming oil rigs. Entry level jobs paying about $80K/yr. Two weeks on, two off. But it sounds like they pretty much do nothing but work and sleep for the 14-straight days they're over there (12-14hr days).

Maybe a good way to get ahead financially if you're young and not tied down by anything. Or it could get you started for a couple years if you're looking to relocate. Certainly wouldn't work for everyone though. I think they applied online through a place called "Precision Drilling".

BTW- Apart from their ties here, they also said the high cost of living in that area is deterrant from making a more permanent move.

Some one must have missed all their math classes. Wyoming has no income taxes. You travel back and forth to Oregon for every shift change and pay Oregons 17 1/2 % personal income tax. Really.

17.5 percent of 80k is a mortgage on a nice home here. Nothing huge mind you, but nice nonetheless.

Cost of living...goods, services, real estate, etc...no mention of taxes.

Who knows what they'll end up doing (it's only been 6mos for them). But for now, they're booking round trip train rides every month.

I'm not sure where on earth that 17.5% figure comes from. It's about half that. Yes, even earning $80k+.

Like too many people you do not understand how income taxes work. You take the first number your government gives you and you say OK. You need to look in the rear view mirror you are being screwed. Your income tax on your last dollar each year is more like 40%. Please read these tax tables?

Determining your tax bracket

Geez. I guess I must be a real dummy.

2011 Oregon State Income Tax rates:
$50k-125k: $4284, + 9% of excess over $50k
$125k-250k: $11,033, + 10.8% of excess over $125K

How is my ignorance causing the potential state tax on $65k to double to 17.5%? I say 65k, because thats about what you'd be paying taxes on (for an 80k gross job) after 10-15% to 401K and a few obvious deductibles.

Move to Washington State. No income tax, atleast as of when I left that area.

Man - what a ripoff. Why would ANYONE live in Oregon with those rates.
