Here's the problem with 'helping' Mexico. Mexico does not operate on a capitalist based economy. Mexico is essentially a feudal state. The various political sub-groups (states and regions) are in fact run by a 'lord', although they are not officially called such. Some are political party hacks, some are drug runners, some are military officials - perhaps retired. But they are feudal in outlook. In our terms, they are crooked in the sense all funds coming into the region or whatever belongs to the 'lord'. He sees how it is spent, and is expected to take care of himself first.

The only way 'we' could 'help' Mexico would be to just take over the whole country, fire the governments at all levels and establish what we think of as a functioning, capitalist republic. Which no one in Mexico would really understand. (Consider how the 'free' people in Egypt recently voted for a government run by the Muslim Brotherhood.)

It isn't really possible to 'help' Mexico's economic problems without severe action. And if we did, then the rest of the world would be mad at us. More than usual, I mean.
Nice post, and pretty dead on.

I think that legal immigration should be more affordable than going to a coyote and should not take years to accomplish. That being said if they choose the illegal route then there should be interdiction teams not to catch and let them claim asylum but to shoot on site. Also how about Uncle Sam guarantees citizenship for people that honorably serve at least 3 years in our armed forces because I know quite a few people who joined served honorably and were then deported. Also we do need to do something about the cartels I say we tell Mexico if they clean up a majority of the mess we will make them a protectorate and then when the country is up and running we allow them statehood

How about ending the war on drugs? That would dry up the corruption in Mexico and stop the war on the American people.

Interesting post. Regarding easier legal immigration: Easy is usually not best. Hookers are easy, but they can get you busted or infected.

I wasn't much opposed to your other ideas, except taking on a protectorate of socialists with no motivation to succeed.

Not meant to be easier but more effective streamlined and cheaper than the smugglers. The hoops the have to jump thru and the prohibitive costs are why the ones who come here to work or better themselves also choose the coyotes given the option to come here legally most would
