Just to stir the interservice pot a bit - and yes, I am Army-
But whenever I see the back and forth with the Navy and Marines, I am reminded of the first US Submarine (and submariner). Everyone remembers David Bushnell's Turtle. What they never seem to remember is the one man crew of the USS Turtle.
SGT Ezra Lee. USMC.
That's right. First submariner was a Marine.
I'll just step back behind that barricade and let the discussion resume.....

Just as Uncle Sam's Misguided Children have been called "Grunts" for nearly as long ... and it's not just because their hats are screwed down too tight.

Actually, the story of who pilots the Turtle came down to this:
A Navy Admiral and Marine Colonel were looking at the TURTLE trying to figure out who would have the honor of running this new contraption.
The Marine Colonel barked, "Sgt Lee, front and center!", to which the Sgt replied, "Aye, aye, Sir!"
The Admiral espied a nearby goldbricking Jack tar and gave a similar command to which the swabbie yelled, "Screw you, Sir! I'm not getting into that death trap!"
And now you know the rest of the story...

It's more of a common sense thing...
'Course, later on, all the Command staff had to say to the enlisted was, "You'll be the hit with the women at the party!"
And ALL common sense went out the porthole...
